The Elk Rut

Every fall, the amazing elk that share the redwoods with us go through mating season – a period of time known as the rut. During the elk rut, mature male elk compete for the females’ attention by antler wrestling one another and creating loud, bellowing vocalizations — known as “bugling.” To see a slideshow of the elk rut, click button below.

We had the amazing chance on our tour yesterday to observe this phenomenon of the coastal fog draping the redwood forest in a blanket of moisture. We sat in awe as we watched the fog bank rapidly roll in over a course of less than 30 minutes!
Scientists say that 25 to 40 percent of the moisture in our redwood ecosystem comes from the fog!
